The small single circles were used from 1882 to 1891 in the five main post offices Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, Tokio and Hakodate. They further were used in Japanese overseas postoffices: Shanghai, Chefoo and Genzan. They can be found in combination with killers and used by themselves alone. The diameter varies between 19 to 20 mm and they were used both in black and brown.
